Guest Post from Gerry King about Walking the Talk for Dementia 2026
Some experiences stay with you long after they have ended, and the Camino de Santiago will always be one of them.
Walking the Talk for Dementia was much more than just a challenge. It was a journey of reflection, resilience and purpose. Every mile walked tested me physically and mentally as a person living with Young Onset Alzheimer’s Disease. But it also reminded me why I was walking: every step was a reminder of the challenges faced by those living with dementia and the importance of raising awareness.
Walking the Talk for Dementia was one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had. It pushed me further than I thought I could go, testing me both mentally and physically.
There were moments when I questioned whether I could keep going, but walking beside others living with dementia, their strength and resilience inspired me to keep going forward.
What made it even more special was being able to share this journey with my daughter. Walking side by side with her filled me with so much pride. Through those tough moments, her enthusiasm, encouragement and support kept me going.
It is a memory I will always treasure. I am so proud of what we achieved together, but more than that, I am even prouder that I got to share this unforgettable moment with my daughter, Stephanie.
Finally I would like to express my heart felt gratitude and thanks to Graham Galloway and Meeting Centres Scotland for giving my daughter and I, this incredible opportunity. It was a privilege to be part of something so meaningful and an experience that has left a lasting impression on me.
