Creating Connection, Confidence and Joy Through Dementia Wellbeing Support

Across Ayrshire, AILN Dementia Befriending proudly runs four welcoming Dementia Wellbeing Cafés/ Meeting Centres designed to support people living with dementia, their families, carers and loved ones.
Our cafés are about so much more than tea and conversation. They are safe, supportive spaces filled with laughter, friendship, creativity and meaningful connection. Every week, people come together to enjoy a wide variety of activities including live singers, dominoes, quizzes, crafts, reminiscence sessions and gentle social activities that encourage confidence, communication and wellbeing.
At the heart of everything we do is the belief that people living with dementia should continue to experience joy, dignity, independence and opportunities to connect with others in ways that feel familiar and empowering.
One particularly special afternoon recently highlighted just how important personalised support can be.
We welcomed a local Tropic skincare representative to one of our wellbeing cafés for a relaxing pamper session focused on hand massage and gentle skincare. Using beautifully fragranced oils, attendees were shown simple hand massage techniques that encouraged relaxation, comfort and sensory connection. The room quickly filled with smiles, conversation and calm.
The session also included a makeup demonstration with one of the ladies living with dementia — an experience that proved incredibly meaningful, not only for her, but for her husband too.
He had previously shared that he wanted to feel more confident supporting his wife with her morning makeup routine at home. Like many carers, he simply wanted to continue helping his loved one feel like herself, but wasn’t always sure how best to do that.
The demonstration offered practical guidance in a warm, supportive environment, showing simple and gentle techniques while preserving dignity, routine and independence. What may seem like a small daily task to some can actually hold huge emotional importance — maintaining identity, confidence and normality.
Moments like these remind us that dementia support is not only about clinical care; it is about relationships, compassion and helping people continue to enjoy the routines and experiences that matter most to them.
Our wellbeing cafés continue to provide opportunities for people to socialise, learn new things, share experiences and access support in a relaxed and welcoming setting. Whether someone joins us for a quiz, enjoys singing along to live music, takes part in crafts or simply sits with a cup of tea and friendly conversation, every visit helps reduce isolation and build community.
At AILN Dementia Befriending, we are proud to support people living with dementia and their carers across Ayrshire, creating spaces where everyone feels valued, included and understood.
